President Muhammadu Buhari has for once taken side with the masses against his cartel of rulers, as he bowed to pressure from the Nigerian youth, prominent Nigerians and international bodies, to proscribe the infamous Special Anti Robbery Squad of the Nigerian police.
The Inspector General of the Nigerian Police Force, Mohammed Adamu, had made the declaration, disbanding the dreaded police department known for its ruthless handling of criminal suspects, which in many instances, led to extra judicial killings. The police IG had said that the personnel of the squad would be dispersed to other units within the police force. This decision received a a nod from Mr President after the Nigerian youth had staged series of peaceful demonstrations, backed by many public figures and prominent celebrities.
The disbanding of SARS is only the first step in our commitment to extensive police reforms in order to ensure that the primary duty of the police and other law enforcement agencies remains the protection of lives and livelihood of our people. pic.twitter.com/XjQMSr3jlm

Although some people may rightly argue that the mere disbandment of SARS and the reintegration of its personnel into other units of the police force without carrying out proper reforms in the police force is a wasted effort, but the truth staring right in our faces is the fact that, Buhari due to whatever reason, has demonstrated for once, that the voice of the people is the voice of God. Scrapping SARS is one step in the direction of the masses, while reforming the police will be the ultimate destination of the desires of the masses to see a professional and internationally acceptable police force that respect and protect the rights of Nigerians and the image of the country anytime, anywhere. We hope that this gesture would be extended to the armed forces, so as to reclaim our lost glories in the area of security among the comity of nations. We say kudos to The President for listening to the masses this once.
