Manchester City midfielder De Bruyne wins the 2019-20 season’s EPL Best Player

Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne has won the EPL Player of the Season award for the 2019-2020 campaign, despite Liverpool running away with the title.

In a single season, the Belgian international playmaker tied the record for assists by delivering 20, equaling a mark set by Arsenal legend Thierry Henry in the 2002-03 period, while scoring 13 goals as well.

In comparison, he produced the most chances and had any player in the division with the most goal participation.

The supporters honored his success by naming him as the standout player of the season in a public vote in which he saw the Liverpool trio Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jordan Henderson, and Sadio Mane, plus Southampton forward Danny Ings, Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope, and Leicester midfielder Jamie Vardy in action.

De Bruyne wins the title from Liverpool’s downtown Virgil van Dijk, while Anfield’s pick Mohamed Salah dominated the competition in 2017-18.

The 29-year-old began the season in a good way, with eight assists and two goals in the first seven rounds of fixtures, where he was involved with at least one goal in each with the exception of a surprising 3-2 defeat to Norwich – a match he only played 33 minutes since being called a substitute.

Although at the start of the season and throughout the festive period he enjoyed his finest vain of form, where he scored three and created three more in a blistering four-game run, during the campaign he was a reliable supplier of excellence to Pep Guardiola ‘s side, finishing on a high as he scored two and lying on another in a 5-0 victory over the Canaries.

However, City finished a respectable second in the league behind Liverpool kings, who separated with an 18-point lead to the title.

In 2016-17 the last league-winning player to earn the gong was Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante.

The news of the award will come as no consolation to the 29-year-old, who was a part of the City squad who unexpectedly crashed to Lyon in the quarter-final stage after a 3-1 loss from the Champions League. De Bruyne netted in that game but his contribution was not sufficiently significant to save Guardiola ‘s side from being on a historic upset at the wrong end.

De Bruyne has played 48 times for Guardiola ‘s men in all levels during the 2019-20 season, scoring 16 times and putting on another 23.

He spent five campaigns with City and now has 57 goals and 89 assists in 222 club appearances.
