- The Senate President, Ahmed Lawan says prohibiting the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (F-SARS) isn’t the answer for ending extrajudicial killings by the Police force
His made this statement after the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, a week ago, prohibited F-SARS faculty and other Tactical Squads of the Force from setting out on routine watches.
Lawan expressed this on Wednesday in light of a movement by Senator Oluremi Tinubu on extrajudicial killings and human rights violation by SARS agents.
The Senate President also states that one of the ways in which SARS can truly be stopped is if the Nigerian government punish officials who are involved in this extrajudicial killings.
Lawyers at Federal level discussed the movement and stated that the maltreatment and violation of citizens human rights by the police, especially, SARS has reached emergency levels.
The Senate is subsequently coordinating it’s boards of trustees on Police and Human Rights to examine instances of violations of rights and extrajudicial killings by the police.
The legislators are additionally requesting that the police set up hotlines for Nigerians to report misuses and common liberties infringement by its authorities.
The upper chamber is further requesting that the police set up an observing unit to investigate the tasks of it’s men.
